Next Generation Cruising

by Sherri Eisenberg

What: Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Where: Caribbean

Perfect for: Hard-bodies who fear boredom or who can't stand to miss the gym.

Youth Factor: While many ships have pools, spas, and gyms, Royal Caribbean takes onboard activities up a notch: The Freedom class of ships have onboard ice rinks, 43-foot rock-climbing walls, boxing rings, and—best of all—a surfing simulator.

Cruise Mates: With 3,000-plus passengers, a little of everyone.

High Seas: Pilates classes, expansive spa menus, one-on-one boxing lessons inside full-size rings—and the highest rock-climbing walls in the industry. (Yes, climbing instructors and helmets are provided.) Royal Caribbean also recently went wireless, so you can use your laptop and cell phone just about anywhere.

Rough Sailing: Generic entertainment (not-so-great Broadway productions), service that can feel rushed, and long dinner lines.

The Deal: Seven-night cruises from Miami start at $699.
