High Design Cruises

by Colleen Clark

M.S. AmaLotus, AmaWaterways, Cambodia and Vietnam

Especially when it comes to travel, good design should give you a sense of place. And no ship does that better than the AmaLotus a floating homage to French-colonial-era aesthetics that will ply the waters of the Mekong River starting in September 2011. The 62 rooms glow by the light of lanternlike lamps. Khmer artifacts and vintage photographs adorn the lobby and dining areas. As on sister ship La Marguerite (pictured), tropical woods cover nearly every surface, from intricate inlaid floors to walls that appear to be woven like the thatch of huts along the riverside. Once on board, it's impossible to forget that you're rolling on the river though Cambodia and Vietnam—but just to be sure, pillow-topped window seats provide an ideal spot to take in the view.
