Miami
Call it Miami 3.0—or is it 4.0? The city that's gone through more costume changes than a Madonna tour continues to surprise us with yet another round of showstopping hotels and new angles to its ongoing evolution. Lately the movement is mostly away from South Beach, a string of hot mini-neighborhoods that mix art, intimate restaurants and lounges, and that quintessential Miami pursuit, conspicuous consumption. Now you can be an airheaded nightlife and beach junkie one day and an informed contemporary gallery hopper the next. Among the new hoods to explore are Overtown, an arts district taking form in the city's oldest African-American enclave; Wynwood, home to the Rubell Family Collection and the new MOCA at Goldman Warehouse; and the Design District, which has some of the city's best shopping at spots like NiBa and Fendi Casa. Hotels are basking in high occupancy levels and stratospheric room rates, which explains why yet another wave of development is on the horizon, including an outpost of Canyon Ranch spa with residences and a hotel designed by David Rockwell; the Nicky O hotel "created" by Nicky Hilton—yes, the sister—with an assist from Roberto Cavalli (one can only imagine); a Miami Beach version of the Meatpacking District's Gansevoort, opening in June (pictured); a W; a sister hotel to L.A.'s Mondrian; and designer Kelly Wearstler's Viceroy South Beach (as well as her redo of the Tides). And more attractions are planned: In 2010, the Miami Art Museum by Herzog and de Meuron will bring even more focus to downtown—and yet another shift in the city's image.
