Hotels With A Past

by Cathay Che

Where: Oracabessa, Jamaica
What it is: A 15-acre seaside resort
What it was: The private estate of author Ian Fleming

The story: Seduction, martinis, assassination. With hope, you'll find only two out of three at this verdant beachside estate, where British author Ian Fleming created the Walther PPK–toting, Aston Martin–driving superspy known as James Bond. Fleming wrote all 14 Bond novels at the massive wooden desk that still sits in the main villa, built in 1946. (His first 007 book, Casino Royale, is the source material for the latest flick, out in November and starring the "blond Bond," Daniel Craig.) But you're not receiving residuals, so what's it got to do with you? Well, in 1992, music entrepreneur Chris Blackwell converted the property into an intimate resort, hoping to attract folks looking for what Fleming enjoyed most here: the quiet stretch of private beach, the lush overgrown foliage, the feeling of seclusion and restfulness. Blackwell added a few villas, but the one to rent is the original Fleming House, whose enormous bamboo master bed is well suited to International Men (and Women) of Mystery.

Be sure to check out: Laughing Waters, the nearby beach (get there by Jet Ski) where a bikini-clad Ursula Andress memorably emerged from the sea in Dr. No.
