The flush: Jade on 36 Bar, Shanghai, China
The lowdown: Hope you're not in a hurry. The two steel cylinder stalls in the space-capsule restrooms at this 36th-floor bar and restaurant in the Pudong Shangri-La hotel in Shanghai look extremely cool—but it takes forever to figure out how to get to the toilets inside. Here's a tip: The doors slide open. Inside, the decor is as sci-fi as you'd expect, with cylindrical fixtures and glowing neon tubes that run from floor to ceiling. Designer Adam Tihany—he's also behind Manhattan's Per Se restaurant and the Aleph Hotel in Rome—says Jade on 36 was inspired by a Chinese jade jewel box. But when you've really gotta go and don't know the trick, Chinese water torture might be the better analogy.
