WILD THING
The scheme: Sustainability
The scene: Baghvan, Pench National Park, India
The second property in India for Conservation Corporation Africa, Baghvan (a.k.a. CC Africa Lodge), is nestled deep in the heart of Pench National Park. The big draw here is the Bengal tigers, so sustainability was paramount to the hotel's design. The 12 freestanding bungalows—built by local villagers around trees and vegetation to minimize the structures' impact on their surroundings—are fitted with handmade Parsi tiles, woven hyacinth furniture, outdoor showers, big shaded decks, and machaans, covered rooftop platforms that overlook the treetops. There's also an open kitchen, so you can watch local chefs prepare traditional Indian dishes (made, of course, from produce grown in the lodge's organic vegetable garden). Then enjoy your spicy curry on one of the wooden decks as you watch the evening's show—leopards, tigers, and other beautiful and endangered jungle creatures—on the move in the park below.
