Design + Architecture

Cities of the Future

by Nicola McCormack

There's nothing like a bleak and frugal present to get us all contemplating what the future will hold. Will it be brighter? Will it be better? And, of course, will there be jetpacks? As in the 1950s, when atom-obsessed Googie architecture arose from the postwar psyche, today's visionaries are letting their imaginations run wild as they plan the cities of the future—even if some of their current projects have been scuppered by the recession. Indeed, there's a serious edge to some of the innovative designs we discovered, particularly when it comes to environmental appeal: a revolving building that produces its own energy, a lobby waterfall that helps cool the air. We can't guarantee that all the projects featured here will get the green light, but if you want to see what our future cities might look like, read on.
