Tcherassi Hotel, Cartagena, Colombia
Colombian fashion designer Silvia Tcherassi, whose vibrant and sensual garments are staples for well-heeled Latin American women, has extended her sophisticated aesthetic to the Tcherassi Hotel, a 250-year-old mansion that's now easily the most exclusive property in Colombia. Each of the seven oversized rooms has an open tropical feel and comes with 14-foot wood-beamed ceilings, artful touches such as bedspreads designed from dress labels, and walk-out balconies that look at the inner courtyards of the tiled roofs and flowering terraces of the Centro Historico. Against the hotel's mostly white scheme are splashes of color like a strategically placed red rose, four sparkling pools, and a dramatic vertical garden with more than 3,000 native plants that covers a wall on an entire side of the property. Staff welcome you with lemonade infused with yerba buena. Chef Daniel Castaño, a Mario Batali disciple, helms the 40-seat coastal Italian restaurant Vera, while the holistic spa offers treatments utilizing Colombian coffee, chocolate, gems, and bamboo.—2009 Hot List
What to pack: Anything colorful (you'll make a statement against the plain white interiors).
