Rig Resort, Gulf of Mexico
An infinity pool that blends into the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico; guest cabins with walls of glass that show nothing but sea and sky. All this and an ultraclean conscience await potential guests at the Rig Resort. Turning dirty-energy oil rigs into renewable-energy, repurposed-structure hotels is Morris Architects' prize-winning idea—and with 4,000 rigs floating in the Gulf alone, this idea is a chain in the making. Each rig has 20,000 square feet of deck space, allowing for a full-service luxury hotel with all the trimmings, as well as those killer views. Wind turbines would be mounted to take advantage of the Gulf's high-speed gusts, powering the hotel complex in combination with geothermal, solar, and wave energy generation. An all-important Bond-worthy twist is to be provided by a "water core," a ring of water topped with a beach conceived as the hotel's centerpiece—in lieu of an atrium. For evening entertainment, underwater acrobatic acts are planned. So just pull up a chair, enjoy some fresh-caught Gulf fish for dinner, and take in the show.
