The World's Wackiest Theme Parks

by Colleen Clark

Take a few costumed creatures; add rides that spin, plunge, and otherwise mess with those hearty helpings of fried food you just ate; maybe top it off with some souvenir photos. The theme park formula doesn't change much, whether you're in Iowa or Osaka. Or does it? Not satisfied with run-of-the-mill Tilt-A-Whirls and flume rides based around some familiar pop-cultural trope (movies, Lego, enormous mice), some pioneering playgrounds are stepping further into the realm of the bizarre, bringing you animatronic resurrections, farting roller coasters, Stalinist petting zoos, and sombrero towers. These offbeat theme parks make you strap on gas masks, escape crocodiles, and operate vibrators. Mickey, I don't think we're in Orlando anymore.
