Greece: Music in Athens, Wine in Santorini
The specialist: Christos Stergiou, TrueGreece; Marousi, Greece
The Dream Trip: "Many of the world's greatest ideasindeed, the cornerstones of modern civilizationwere born in Greece, and music is but one example. Over coffee in Athens with acclaimed Greek classical pianist Eugenia Papadimas, you'll learn how Western music inherited a number of its basic principles from ancient Greece. Did you know that Pythagoras invented the base notation musical system, or that the first keyboard was created in Greece?
"Then Papadimas will take you to her home for a private performance from the works of Manos Hadjidakis, arguably the greatest modern Greek composer. You'll leave with a better understanding of the blend of ancient Greek, Western, and Oriental influences that epitomizes Greek culture today [$4,900 for two].
"Along with music often comes wine, which is as essential as food for Greeks. Next it's off to Santorini to meet Paris Sigalas, a big shot here and founder of Domaine Sigalas, one of the most prominent labels in Greece. He'll give you a private tour of his winery, take you around the vineyard, explain why the soil produces such great wine, and guide you through a tasting of some experimental wines.
"To end, you'll have a romantic four-course dinner at Ambrosia (pictured), a nearby restaurant with breathtaking views of the caldera, where Sigalas has arranged a pairing of his wines with traditional Santorinian dishes [$1,000 for two]."
