The Dream List: Once-in-a-Lifetime Trips

by Brook Wilkinson

Spain: Wine in Rioja

The specialist: Virginia Irurita, Made for Spain; Madrid

The Dream Trip: "You cannot imagine how essential wine is to the Spanish. Since he was a child, my father always drank a glass with lunch and dinner. And to the Spanish, nothing says wine like Rioja. Every year, four experts select the best wine of Rioja from the previous year's reds and whites, and our clients gain entrance to one of their closed tastings in mid-September. The judges will taste about 150 wines, but you're free to sip as few as you like, listen to their comments, and ask questions. The night before, you'll have dinner with judge Lidia García Merino, the president of La Rioja's Wine Brotherhood, at Venta Moncalvillo, the restaurant where judge Carlos Echapresto is sommelier. We'll also arrange a half-day guided tour of acclaimed Rioja wineries, a ticket to the last tasting (where the winners are announced), and visits to the two winning wineries [$2,540 for two]."
