OREGON: Creamy Chowder
Let Northeasterners argue about the merits of Manhattan chowder versus New England chowder versus Rhode Island chowder. Along the divinely scenic Pacific shoreline west of Portland, where icy gusts of wind skip in with the waves, thick and creamy is the only way to have it. Norma's Ocean Diner, in the semi-honky-tonk resort town of Seaside, displays a whiteboard list of fresh local seafood, but you can always count on the kitchen's regal chowder. Although the menu says that it is pork-free, it's saturated with a taste of luxury as plush as fatback, its extravagance augmented by a large pat of butter on the side that, when dolloped in, melts into a golden puddle.
