Winter Comfort Food

by Jane and Michael Stern

Where better to have a gargantuan serving of meat loaf than in a gleaming New Jersey diner? The Tick Tock Diner, which has been remodeled and polished multiple times over the decades, is a full-service 24/7 eatery that attracts truckers and travelers by day and partiers in the wee hours of the night. While every plate of food is bigger than life, the rib-sticking, blue-collar meat loaf is especially noteworthy: It arrives as three hefty slabs under a mantle of heavy-duty beef gravy. It occupies so much space on its large oval plate that separate bowls are required for side dishes like mashed potatoes and carrots. The Tick Tock motto, emblazoned on the roof sign, is "Eat Heavy."
