MAINE: Shore Dinner
One of summer's happiest culinary rituals is a shore dinner on the Maine coast. Here on Georgetown island, separated from the mainland by a short bridge, is one of the happiest places to have it. Five Islands Lobster Company is located on a wharf from which dozens of lobster boats sail—and deliver the catch to hungry customers. The picnic table seating overlooks blue waters and five small islands tufted with pine trees. The full dinner includes steamer clams with broth and butter, as well as potatoes and corn on the cob thrown into the 50-gallon boil pot, along with those just-caught, still snapping lobsters—often as big as four pounds. Trapped in the deepest and coldest water on the coast, the lobsters are packed with pearly meat that is firm, juicy, and deliriously ocean-flavored. What could be more summer?
