The North Fork Table & Inn looks like the house you spent the July 4 holidays playing badminton behind as a kid, not one of Long Island's most sought-after dinner spots. That's no mistake: Chefs Gerry Hayden and Claudia Fleming did the whole Manhattan foodie hot spot thing (he was at Aureole and Amuse, she was the James Beard Award–winning pastry chef at Gramercy Tavern), decided they didn't like it, and took their culinary prowess to the country-squire setting of Southold. Dishes such as butter-poached lobster, orecchiette with braised lamb, and upside-down peach-raspberry cobbler with cream-cheese ice cream take advantage of the bounty of the farms on the North Fork of Long Island and the surrounding waters. For those too full to make it back home, the inn offers four bright-white rooms that match the colonial understatement of the restaurant.
