World's Best Farm Hotels

by Colleen Clark

Bambu Indah, Ubud, Bali

Field work: Farms come in every shape, size, and hue, and the color of the Bambu Indah landscape in Bali is dazzling green. If you can drag yourself away from the hypnotic view of the rice paddies from the deck of your reclaimed Javanese farmhouse, you can work in the garden, tour the surrounding terraces, or have a go at rice harvesting.

Farm table: Bambu Indah offers a free-form mealtime experience. Mornings bring local mangosteen and rambutan with carafes of the strong, local Toraja coffee. Dinners served alfresco in the garden or on the deck of your teakwood villa might feature grilled local fish with seasonal greens or salads and stews dreamed up from the bounty of the garden.

Bedtime: Jewelry magnate John Hardy transplanted 11 teak farmhouses from Java to this wild, jungle-shrouded site just outside Ubud. The rustic teak interiors have a boho grace via hand-carved, mosquito net–draped beds; color-saturated handwoven Tibetan rugs; and African wall hangings. But nothing beats the homegrown views of those emerald rice paddies.
