Long Weekend Getaways

by Sherri Eisenberg

GET INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Fly into: Denver International Airport (DIA)

Check out: The mountains just outside of town

The lure: Hiking, biking, and exploring the peaks and valleys, while basing yourself among the cosmopolitan comforts of Denver

The experience: Ski season is over, which means lower rates. And the mountains are just as breathtaking when the white stuff melts off. The Mile-High City was founded during the Gold Rush, and the foothills of the Rockies are just to the west. Starting from the Colorado Trail or Mount Falcon Park, there are plenty of trails to explore by foot or bike. If you prefer a bigger adrenaline rush, there's rock climbing and rappelling at Rocky Mountain National Park (pictured), about 70 miles northwest of Denver. With 416 square miles of hard-core but beautiful backcountry and 60-some mountains higher than 12,000 feet, adventure is easy to find.

Oh, and: Don't miss Red Rocks Park, 15 miles west of Denver (you know, the place where U2 filmed the video for "Sunday Bloody Sunday"). This gorgeous maze of sandstone crags sits at the spot where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. The terrain is rough, so you'll need those hiking boots. The enormous outdoor amphitheater will be hosting some great acts this summer, including R.E.M., the Cure, the Police, James Taylor, and Alison Krauss with Robert Plant. (Wait, what year is this, anyway?)
