Las Vegas, Nevada
The trimmings: It's no surprise that Christmas is glitzy in Las Vegas. Strands of lights are wrapped around more than just firs and pines in this desert oasis. The main draw is a three-acre cactus garden twinkling with half a million bulbs. The best way to see the display (located at the Ethel M. Chocolate Factory) is through 3-D glasses, making the chollas, saguaros, and beavertails come to life.
Check in: For a more traditional (yet deliciously over-the-top) display, book at the Bellagio Las Vegas. The famous fountains dance to Christmas carols, and the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens are a sight to behold. A 42-foot-tall Shasta fir is covered with 13,500 lights and 1,800 ornaments. White carnations are employed to create topiary polar bears, while animatronic penguins enjoy the ice pond. And this being Vegas, the gardens are open 24 hours a day.
