RETRO AVIATION CHOCOLATES FROM BELGIUM
about $12
I was taking a flight from Spain to Montreal a few months ago via Brussels. The MalagaBrussels portion was on the hellish side, but I perked up when I saw these chocolates in a shop in the Brussels airport with retro-looking air stewardesses rendered in watercolor by Belgian illustrator Jaak De Koninck (a.k.a. Jack Learoy). I subsequently learned that the brand, Starbrook, had a great story behind it. The airline-themed chocolates take their name and inspiration from Starbrook airlines, a private air mail airline started in California by the artist's family in the Belle Époque of aviation. Or so their website says. I haven't been able to find info on that airline, and the possible fiction is part of the fun. In anycase the chocolates remind me of the glamour years of air travel. —Karen Burshtein
