Hotels With A Past

THE HALLS OF DISCIPLINE: McMenamins Kennedy School
Where: Portland, Oregon
What it is: A 35-room inn
What it was: A place to learn the three R's—and mind your P's and Q's

The story: If the name didn't give it away, the original blackboards and wall clocks in the guest rooms would. The Kennedy School, a modest, salt-of-the-earth inn located not far from Portland's airport, was from 1915 until 1980 the domain of stern schoolmarms and disruptive spitballers. (Oh yeah, we're sure you were an angel in grade school.) The property was renovated and changed over to a hotel in 1997. Entering the swinging front doors and walking along the too-wide hall might still provoke anxieties of SAT scores and prom dates. But the eclectic art collection, microbrewery, cigar-friendly Detention Bar, and movie theater will remind you that school's out for good.

Be sure to check out: The delicious Hammerhead Amber Ale or the Old Schoolhouse Pale Ale. Even better, enjoy one after reclining in the hot tub inside the former teachers' lounge.
