Project No. 8a and Opening Ceremony, New York City, New York
Ace Hotel
Our favorite urban hotels are those that become a destination for locals and tourists alike, helping guests to instantly connect with the city. The Ace Hotel seems to do that better than any other chain, with restaurants, bars, and now boutiques that both showcase and attract local artists, designers, and other creative types. In New York City, that translates into two on-site outposts of trendsetting boutiques, Project No. 8a and Opening Ceremony. No. 8a ("a" for Ace) is billed as the anti–souvenir shop, shilling vintage 42nd Street peep-show tokens, I ♥ NY snow globes with floating trash bags, and mod sex toys lining apple-green vintage library shelves. Opening Ceremony sells It kid labels like Rachel Comey and Suno in addition to exclusive travel kits, Alexander Wang condoms, and a collaboration with Tumi on limited-run lines of colorful suitcases, all of which you can shop for while gorging on free gummy bears. The Ace makes it easy to do some serious credit-card damage, especially if you've had one too many Bitches Brews in the hotel's Breslin Bar. Price points in the boutique certainly skew higher than the hotel's egalitarian room rates, but there's a something-for-everyone range, from a few clams on up to several hundo.
