The World's Smallest Hotels

Rutundu, Lake Rutundu, Kenya

If you like the idea of being king of your own castle, why not follow in the footsteps of the future of King of England? Rutundu, a remote two-cabin lodge on the slopes of Mount Kenya, is where Prince William proposed marriage to Miss Catherine Middleton in October 2010. It's a gorgeous, romantic spot, but don't expect Buckingham Palace–style accommodations: The rough-luxe cabins are made entirely of cedar logs, with moss stuffed between the cracks. There's no electricity, and kerosene lamps provide the only light ("I love the warm fires and candle lights," wrote Middleton in the guest book). If you're too busy hiking, trout fishing, and spotting game (the incredibly rare bongo, a forest antelope, lives in these parts) to cook dinner on the gas stove, you can have the staff prepare your meals. You will, however, have to help yourself: The cabin's not quite big enough for waiter service. Squint, and the heather forest and moorland terrain outside look a bit like the English countryside. But it was probably the sense of utter privacy that drew the couple here. With only the one-bed main cabin and a smaller building for housing your royal entourage, there's little chance of being bothered by the paparazzi.
