The Hoxton, Hoxton, London
As if the Ace Hotel spoke with a British lilt, the Hoxton and its "urban lodge" concept opened to much fanfare in 2006 and continues to pull in hipsters looking for an affordable, art-filled antidote to boring chains. Five rooms out of 205 go for £1—if you're lucky and fast enough in the quarterly sales—while the rest clock in at £59 to £199, depending on how far in advance you book. While its location is a bit rough around the edges (Great Eastern Street is a major traffic artery that bisects the East London hood of Hoxton), the slick interiors are anything but. You'll find brick and polished concrete with blazing fireplaces in the lobby, clubby neon lighting in the hallways, and muted wood panels and suede settees in the identical 215-square-foot rooms. The linens are Frette, the duvets duck down, the toiletries C.O. Bigelow, and the signage cheeky. In addition, an hour of local and international phone calls, a light Pret a Manger breakfast, and Wi-Fi are all complimentary. Ask for one of the three new designer-commissioned rooms for ultimate character. Downstairs, the Soho House–run Hoxton Grill dishes up brasserie fare and scene aplenty in a neighborhood already renowned for its pubby, clubby, gallery-driven cool.
