Haymarket Hotel, London

Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards Overall Score: 93.9

No. of Units: 50

Price: $$$

This West End newcomer was formerly the head office of American Express. Designed in the early nineteenth century by John Nash, who was also the architect of Buckingham Palace, the "big town house" is close to Piccadilly Circus, the National Gallery, and Trafalgar Square. "The interior furnishings have bursts of vivid colors that brighten up the place. It's funky and elegant." Individually decorated rooms, with custom-made pieces and oversized headboards, combine modern and antique furniture. The food at Brumus is "surprisingly good, especially the afternoon tea with the best scones in town." Check out the life-size bronze horse standing at the bar. "It's one of the best small hotels I've ever stayed in."
