Vidago, Portugal
Any apprehension I felt approaching the entrance of Vidago Palace last year, with its spectacularly grand facade, disappeared as soon as I walked through the doors and was greeted by the warm and hospitable Portuguese staff. Staying here, you get the feeling of checking into a sepia-toned postcard of privileged life in Belle Époque Portugal. The building was originally conceived as a country residence for the royal family, and the sense of past is so potent that I eventually assumed the idle rhythms of early-twentieth-century leisure. My favorite experience was strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds, the air fragrant with cedar and eucalyptus trees, before breakfast and after dinner.—A., Hot List reviewer since 2004
