Ntwala Island Lodge

Caprivi, Namibia

Every photo I saw of Namibia before I set foot in the country was of a severe, stark landscape. Imagine my surprise, then, when in 2005 I found myself on a teeny island in the middle of the Zambezi River, surrounded by luscious greenery as far as I could see. I was there to check out the Ntwala Island Lodge, a four-bungalow affair that’s a quick canoe ride from Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, yet so well hidden that I rarely saw another person, let alone another tourist. The lodge itself has private plunge pools and Cape Town–quality meals, but it’s the other luxuries that I long to return for. For one, each bungalow has a large deck that hangs right over the river and also comes with access to a boat and local boat driver. Now when I think of Namibia, I think of gliding around the woodlands and waterways of the Caprivi in our little boat, watching elephants at the water’s edge.—D., Hot List reviewer since 2001
