11 Hard-to-Get-to Hotels

Getting there: Two hour climb or cable car

You could take a cable car to this simple hotel hidden high in the peaks of the Yellow Mountain range, but adventurous souls—like our reader Jamie Winkleman, who journeyed to this hotel after undergoing chemotherapy—opt for the two-hour climb up some 60,000 stairs. The accommodations aren’t glamorous, but the scenery is storied: the mountain range’s dramatic cliffs, hot springs, and pine trees (one of which is estimated to be 1,500 years old) have been a popular subject for Chinese painters and poets for centuries.
