What Not to Do in New Orleans

by Pableaux Johnson

Don't…
SWELTER IN THE SUMMERTIME

There's one thing about New Orleans that's darned near inescapable: It's unapologetically subtropical. Summertime lasts from April to October, and temperatures are often in the high 90s, with humidity percentages to match. Sure, it's great for the skin (no moisturizer needed here), but when the air gets particularly thick, it can make a stroll round the French Quarter feel like a knee-deep walk through molasses. Near-daily summertime thunderstorms help cool things off a bit, but they often work according to Murphy's Law—it'll only start pouring when it's too late to run back to the hotel.

Instead…
TAKE ON THE SUBTROPICAL TEMPERATURES OR WAIT FOR THE COOL-DOWN

If you can stand the heat, carry a collapsible umbrella in case of a quick downpour—it'll save your hairdo and your pride. (Your alternative is to pay five bucks for a multicolored garbage-bag poncho and do the tourist's walk of shame.) Or you could always join NOLA's grand tradition of the lunchtime nap to soak up some spirit-restoring AC before powering up for late-night activities. If constant perspiration isn't for you, spring and fall are the best seasons to visit, with temperatures dropping down to the high 70s.
