With its burgeoning popularity, Berlin is cleaning up its act—much to the disappointment of its old fans and inhabitants, who had gotten used to down-market charm and cheap thrills. It's easy to get lost in the new wave of anonymous chain stores and hotels that has swept over the city in the last decade. But Berlin is far from a victim of its own success: Beneath the new glitz is a highly cosmopolitan city that has managed, on its side streets, to preserve much of its quirky glamour, with unrestored antique shops, bookstores, and some of the coolest old-school restaurants and bars in Europe, as well as an art scene that continues to operate in high gear. Here are ten ways not to be bored by Berlin.
