What Not to Do in Barcelona

Don't…
Pay Full Price for the Sights

La pela es la pela ("Money talks"), the locals love to say. And at many museums and venues, it practically screams. Once one of Europe's best-value cities, Barcelona has become quite pricey: The entry fees for many of the sights top those of Paris and London attractions. A day out at Gaudí's big three (the Casa Batlló, Sagrada Familia, and La Pedrera) tallies up to the considerable sum of €45 (over $60). Museum prices have inched up, too. Unless your schedule can accommodate a visit to the Picasso Museum on a Sunday after 3 pm or MNAC, Catalonia's national museum, on the first Sunday of the month (when the entrance fees are waived), you won't see much change from a tenner at the ticket offices.

There are a handful of money-saving ways to sightsee on a budget. The Tourist Offices sell a variety of cards that give great discounts. Most popular and far-reaching is the Barcelona Card, which offers you free public transport and big discounts (if not gratis entry) to all the major attractions. Culture vultures may be better off with an Articket, which permits entrance to any of the seven participating museums for €25 (nearly $35). But, hey, why spend any money at all? Gaudí's masterpiece La Pedrera has a free gallery on its first floor, and CaixaForum, one of the best contemporary art spaces in Spain, is also free. Afterward, cross the road, have a beer outside the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, and then stroll over to the Font Màgica (pictured)—you will have seen a trio of major attractions for a song.
