Traveling With the Oscars

by Matthew Link

The Flick: Amadeus (1984)

Oscar Nods: Winner of eight Oscars, including Best Picture

The Setting: Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg

Czech List: Austria is still hung over from the yearlong party it threw in 2006 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its favorite son's birth. But Mozart sometimes felt more at home in Prague—and Czech director Milos Forman chose to shoot Amadeus in his own homeland, not Mozart's, since Prague looked more pristinely 18th century than Austria. In fact, the scene in which Mozart premieres his opera Don Giovanni was filmed at Prague's mammoth wooden Estates Theatre (formerly the Tyl), where the actual premiere was held in 1787. You can still nab one of the elegant box seats for under $100. Bertramka, a Mozart museum housed in the manor house where the composer often stayed, showcases the untouched rooms where he finished scribbling Don Giovanni—as well as preserved locks of his hair! The Czech government threw open six different palaces for Forman to film in, including the Baroque Archiepiscopal Palace, which stood in for Emperor Joseph's hangout; Mozart's morose pauper's burial was shot near the Leopold Gate at Vyšehrad castle, which has gorgeous views over the city—and now, naturally, an Amadeus Hotel nearby.
