Traveling With the Oscars

by Matthew Link

The Flick: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

Oscar Nods: Winner for Best Visual Effects; four nominations total

The Setting: The Caribbean and the Bahamas

A Pirate's Life for You: Yes, there are modern-day pirates, found mostly in the Straits of Malacca or off the coast of Somalia. But they're not as fun and adorable as Johnny Depp, and we doubt they wear as much mascara. Better stick to the Caribbean, where the only buccaneering going on is the overpriced cocktails on cruise ships. You can still swashbuckle in the footsteps of the first two Pirates movies, which were shot throughout the islands (as was the third, At World's End, opening May 25, 2007). In Dominica—where according to island lore there's a pirate treasure from the 1500s still waiting to be discovered—the crew relished the bounty of the deluxe Fort Young Hotel, an actual old battlement clutching a cliff. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, you can take your own private Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley to the idyllic Young Island Resort, a 35-acre private-island retreat (pictured) where the Pirates gang crashed in luxe oceanside cottages (Depp mostly chilled on his private yacht). Some of the locales in the films can be retraced on a Pirates-themed cruise with Beyond Boundaries Travel, which stops on the Bahamas's remote Great Exuma Island, where Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow, was marooned twice. No, he didn't stay at the Four Seasons.
