World's Sexiest Penthouses

by Mark Ellwood

PENTHOUSE SUITE, RALEIGH HOTEL, MIAMI BEACH
As sexy as: Lauren Bacall, in her Bogie days.
Titillation factor: The overhead view of the beauties sunning by the world-famous pool.
Size matters: 6,000 square feet, on the 8th floor.
The seduction: This classic hotel on South Beach—a vintage spot built by L. Murray Dixon in 1940—languished in lavish obscurity until André Balazs snapped it up in 2002. He re-upped the glamour quotient with a retro makeover worthy of a 1940s noir thriller, sprucing up the wood-paneled bar downstairs and luring a loucher clientele (wags dubbed the place marmont-by-the-Sea). The three-bedroom penthouse suite has cream low-slung modernist sofas, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a dinner party–sized dining table. Best of all is the almost 2,000-square-foot terrace—ideal for continuing the party after a skinny-dip in the Raleigh's voluptuous pool, where Esther Williams used to splash around.
The tab: $5,000 per night
