Luxury Tents & Tree Houses

by Sarah Tuff

Molokai Ranch, Molokai, Hawaii
This wave-shaped island might be called the anti-Maui: Few tourists ever make it here, though it's only an hour and change by ferry, and it remains a deeply soulful, quiet place. To reach Molokai Ranch's 40 canvas "tentalows"—a combination of tent and bungalow near the beach—you'll be given a map and pointed up a beat-up dirt road, far from the main town, which is pretty sleepy. The 103-year-old, 65,000-acre working ranch was founded by a Hawaiian prince, and you might spy a few of the paniolo cowboys on a day's work. No work for you, though: The housekeeper sweeps away any wet sand you might track in from the nearby tidal pools, or any grass from the oceanfront golf course. You could kayak the mangroves or mountain-bike the 125 miles of singletrack. Or, you know, not. There are no other tourists around to say different.
