Pansea Ksar Ghilane, Saharan Desert, Tunisia
An air-conditioned linen tent, surrounded by palm trees in the middle of the Sahara? You must be seeing a mirage as you rumble through the dunes in your 4x4. But no, there are 60 of these dove-colored, jellyfish-shaped tents, grouped in clusters around a free-form swimming pool and solarium in southern Tunisia at Pansea Ksar Ghilane. Hung with African rugs and lanterns, each has its own bathroom and double bed, into which you'll fall after a day of camel trekking to crumbling Roman forts. The only things missing (happily) are TVs and telephones. Evenings are spent watching the shadows fall over the Sahara as the chefs stir a beef stew called mloukhia. And when your friends back home ask how you survived a trek across the Sahara, just don't tell them about this particular mirage.
