Tsala, South Africa
At Tsala, you feel like you're floating somewhere over Africa, but you're actually very much grounded—specifically, in the thick forests of South Africa's Western Cape, about halfway between Durban and Cape Town. Each of the ten suites at this wilderness resort has its own deck, elevated nearly 20 feet off the forest floor, with an infinity pool. On any given day you could head to the Indian Ocean to parasail, deep-sea fish, or sample oysters at Plettenberg Bay. On the terrestrial side, there are elephant and monkey sanctuaries to explore. But right now, you're probably content to wander among the great elder and candlewood trees and the soaring stone-and-glass architecture that blends into their branches. The staff navigates suspended walkways to serve you the Relais & Châteaux cuisine, including forest mushroom-and-truffle soup, port-marinated springbok loin, and a chocolate mousse tower.
