Luxury Family Vacations

by Kate Sekules

Cruise, properly

Most luxury cruise lines don't even allow under-12s on board, let alone lay on any activities for them. Crystal is different. Despite not widely publicizing the fact, this, one of the swellest of all cruise lines, is so kid-friendly that both its ships have playrooms and in-stateroom babysitting, plus, on child-heavy sailings, Junior Activities directors and programs for everyone 3 to 17. The secret is simple: Sail during school vacations. That's when they break out the Play-Doh—and pizza parties, princess and pirate T-shirt painting, scavenger hunts, "Crystal Idol" competitions, pajama movie nights, and family karaoke. Even when there are fewer kids on board, crew members will have them making cookies in the galley or hanging out backstage with the show performers. Best of all, children get to visit with the captain on the bridge—a treat adults have been denied since 9/11.
