World's Most Extravagant Trips

by Danielle Pergament

Live like a Doge for a week in the grandest of palazzi: the Red House in Venice. The palace is the former residence of people with impressive names and even more impressive art collections—like Matthias von der Schulenburg. First built in the 15th century, it served as the Imperial embassy in 1754, and although we don't know exactly what that means, it sure sounds swell. The palazzo is just what it should be for 31,500 euros a week (that's about $47,000 to you, Yank): an ornate and gilded affair complete with majestic bedrooms, views of the canal, libraries, fine antiques, grand ceilings, a private boat with a skipper, a garden, and a huge swimming pool. Your neighbors for the week will be the tourists staying at the famous Hotel Cipriani just down the canal, but don't concern yourself—simply wave at the poor souls from your private patio. But of course the Red House comes with its own help. And if you've ever rented a palazzo only to find the staff a little on the mangy side, you'll be relieved to know that the butler worked for the Ferragamo family for years and is known for wearing the latest fashions from Europe's best houses.
