World's Most Extravagant Trips

by Danielle Pergament

The only thing more full of hot air than the new Krug Balloon might be the people who own it. The balloon was created by the design team of Domeau & Pérès, which is French for "lots of white leather." The perimeter of the basket and the cushions inside are made of the finest white leather, usually reserved for fancy handbags. Think of the balloon as a really, really big Birkin. The basket has room for eight guests in total, plus a perch for the pilot and in-flight butler. The balloon travels around both the U.S. and Europe, and is available for private reservation. Aside from the opportunity to float above, say, Paris, for a day, the main event is lunch. You'll start the hors d'oeuvres portion of the meal on solid ground, and once you're up, up, and away, you are served the appetizer, main course, dessert, and, of course, all the Krug Champagne you can shake a crystal flute at. Marc Brétillot, the company's "food artist," is not without a sense of humor: When you open the main course, a feuilleté de canard, feathers fly out. The price for getting high? Only $50,000.
