Hot List All-Stars 2012

The Jefferson

Washington, D.C.

I’ve stayed in a lot of very nice hotels all around the world, but never have I walked into one of such stateliness and intimacy as The Jefferson in Washington, D.C., where I first stayed in 2010. It wasn’t just the hush about the place, the marble floors, the intricate plasterwork and ample gilding, or even the serene and courtly bust of old T. J. himself. It was how all of these things— and the perfection of the room and the respectful but relaxed service—fit together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. The Jefferson spoke to me as no other hotel ever has, and as every hotel should. What it said was: “You are safe from all care. Here, no unpleasantness will ever find its way.” I live in New York, but a year after I first stayed at The Jefferson, I was married in D.C. and spent my wedding night at the hotel, secure in its promise.—K., Hot List reviewer since 1998
