Across the country, speakeasies, where fancy cocktails are shaken up in dimly lit dens, are multiplying at a fast clip. Even Los Angeles, the home of see-and-be-seen scenes, has traded its obsession with paparazzi-hounded velvet ropes in favor of under-the-radar watering holes exuding vintage ambience. Inside, past those unmarked doors, you'll find bartenders in suspenders mixing nostalgic drinks with names like Gin-Gin Mule and Palm Frond, and there'll likely be some guy in a bowler hat tickling out jazz on an upright piano. So what if alcohol isn't actually illegal anymore? It's all about harking back to more exciting times when it was socially acceptable to drink booze brewed in a bathtub.
