Frescobaldi Wine Bar at FCO, Rome, Italy
It mystifies us that food- and wine-obsessed countries like Italy tolerate such soulless bars in their airports. Which is why we are so excited that Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport finally has bars worthy of the country's vini. There are three locations of the Frescobaldi Wine Bar, curated by the Frescobaldis—a family that's been in the business for more than 700 years. The bars offer the winemaker's estate bottling as well as by-the-glass Sauvignons, Brunellos, and grappas from numerous other Italian producers. Prices hover around $12 per glass, leaving you plenty of cash for antipasti like carpaccio with smoked Gorgonzola or mozzarella with sardines. You can also pick up well-priced bottles to carry with you for gifts. Or to sneak open at 30,000 feet, depending on who you get stuck next to on the flight.
