Escape from New York

Take the Subway to City Island, the Bronx

Escape route: Take the No. 6 subway train to the end of the line at Pelham Bay and transfer to the BX29 City Island Bus, which travels to City Island, a wisp of land in Long Island Sound with a small-town nautical vibe.

Make a day of it: City Island may not have the charm of a New England fishing village, but there are enough seafood joints, tackle shops, yacht clubs, and leafy streets lined with historic homes that you won't believe you're in the Bronx. At Jack's Bait and Tackle, a hub of City Island's fishing community since 1945, you can rent a small outboard motorboat complete with life jackets, maps, enough gas for a day of fishing, and a short operational lesson ($60). Whether or not you actually catch anything, Johnny's Famous Reef Restaurant is the spot to hit for lunch: divey and delicious fish-fry heaven with picnic tables overlooking the Sound. Spend the afternoon exploring on foot; the City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum houses photos and relics of the island's fishing and shipbuilding history (open Saturdays and Sundays 1 to 5 pm).

Perfect ending: City Island Avenue is one long row of retro-kitschy seafood restaurants. While little of the seafood served here comes from the surrounding waters, high-quality, gigantically proportioned meals are plentiful. Sammy's Fish Box is a dinner favorite for its house-made corn bread and Crab Leg Combination, a positively intimidating pile of Alaskan king, dungeness, and snow crab legs.—Siobhan Adcock
