Escape from New York

by Concierge.com Staff

Bike to Nyack, New York

Escape route: If you can cycle up the West Side bike path to the George Washington Bridge and feel like you've got plenty more to give, keep pedaling across the bridge and 20 miles up tree-lined Route 9W to the charming village of Nyack on the west shore of the Hudson River, opposite Tarrytown.

Make a day of it: The Runcible Spoon Café (pitured) is where the cycling set gathers for sustenance (the giveaways are the ample bike racks and the equally ample calves of your fellow diners). Its bakery serves up sticky buns, panini, and all manner of tasty muffins that alone are worth the trip from Manhattan. Rookies planning to save their strength for the ride back should check out the antique stores (around 30 at last count) around Broadway and Main Street, while seasoned bikers might want to see more of the Hudson by cycling the eight-mile Haverstraw Trail from Nyack Beach up between Hook Mountain's cliffs and the shoreline. Note: This is a very popular route with cyclists, and local law enforcement in Nyack is primed to fill the municipal coffers with fines levied on pedal-powered tourists. So while in this area, be sure to ride single file and refrain from blowing through stop lights. (Not that you would ever do that anyway, of course.)

Perfect ending: For a change of scenery on the way home, cycle to Piermont and follow Tallman Mountain State Park's path network. If you don't fancy spending a night in the great outdoors, keep the river on your left.—Nicola McCormack
