MaryJanesFarm, Moscow, Idaho
The pace: Get into the rhythm of nature on a farm.
The place: MaryJanesFarm, a 50-acre organic spread in Moscow, Idaho, is technically a bed-and-breakfast, but it's a far cry from those frilly Victorians you've encountered before. Owner MaryJane Butters (yes, her real name) welcomes guests to stay in one of the five 12- by 14-foot "wall tents," wooden platforms draped in sturdy canvas and furnished with antiques and comfy down-plumped beds. Flowers are everywhere, even along the pathway to the outhouse and in the shared shower house (we never said this wasn't rustic). Working on a farm would keep you busy from sunup to sundown, of course, but remember: You're vacationing on a farm. In between breakfasting on just-laid eggs (included) and prepping fresh produce in the outdoor kitchens for dinner, you can pluck strawberries, paint watercolors, and hike the surrounding hills. There's not much in the way of nightlife, but that's okay. You'll be waking early with the crowing of the rooster.
