THE CASTLE
Château de Cassis, Provence, France
A childhood's worth of fairy tales guarantees romantic notions of castles. Unlike many a dark and drafty fortress, though, Château de Cassis actually delivers. Built in the 14th century, it has lookout towers, pools and ponds, heavy stone pillars, and fireplaces you could drive a car through. High above the Côte d'Azur town of Cassis, the castle is built into the jagged stone cliffs (that's it, in the center of the picture) and enjoyed a rather long run as a Roman watchtower and medieval fortress before becoming a five-bedroom hotel. This isn't the kind of place where you drop your bags and head off to hang with the local peasants, either. Rather, expect to check in for a weeklong date. Light the candelabra, uncork a dusty bottle of wine, and, you know, Rapunzel, let down your hair.
