Summer Lovin'

by Danielle Pergament

Winvian, Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

It was not by chance that the poets who wrote about nature were called the Romantics. Deep woods, lush canopies of foliage, and babbling brooks have always had a way of kicking up the enchantment level. The Winvian resort, just outside Litchfield, Conn., and bordering a 4,000-acre conservation area, tests the theory. This resort has all the trappings of, well, a resort—wine cellar, spa, and a Ducasse-trained chef—but the real draw is the setting. With two main buildings and 18 eccentrically designed private cottages, the property spans 113 very New England-y acres of pine trees, ponds, and wildlife. The cottages, each the brainchild of a different architect, are whimsical: One is a fully restored 1968 helicopter reconfigured with every amenity; another is made to look like a library, with double-height walls of books, ladders, and a secret bedroom; yet another has a gushing waterfall in the bedroom. But we're partial to the Treehouse, a two-story cottage suspended in a thicket of oak trees 35 feet off the ground. The view of the forest from inside the trees is stunning—you might even call it poetic.
