Ski + Snowboard

Mountain Highs

by Sarah Tuff

Vatican City has the Sistine Chapel, Florence has the Duomo, South Tyrol has Vigilius Mountain Resort, just west of the Dolomites. No fewer than 18 modern-day Michelangelos collaborated on Italy's latest architectural masterpiece, a 41-room larch-and-glass hotel whose 4,900-foot perch is reachable only by cable car. Vigilius is as pleasing to the earth as it is to the eye, with triple-thick windows that soak up the sun and rooms heated by wood chips. Two restaurants serve up hearty Mediterranean and local cuisine (think tortellini with parmesan mousse), but don't worry about counting calories: Alpine trails—including a racecourse—snake in every direction from the property. And after a day of skiing on the cottony clouds beneath your feet, followed by a skin peel of honey and polenta and a dip in the indoor spring-fed pool, you may realize that not even Italian art can rival the divinity of nature. Doubles from $368, including breakfast.
