Ski + Snowboard

Mountain Highs

by Sarah Tuff

Life is so private at Little Lyford Pond Camps that guests have been known to make snow angels in their birthday suits. In fact, it's a longstanding local tradition to heat up in the sauna then take a bracing romp in the white stuff. And there is a lot of white stuff around. For Nordic-skiing nuts, it's a Garden of Eden: The snowplow skips the road to Little Lyford, so it's a six-mile cross-country ski to the former hunting camp, now run by the Appalachian Mountain Club. Some 37,000 acres of pristine Maine wilderness surround the camp; adventure options include dogsledding to frozen waterfalls and ice-climbing the 70-foot walls at Gulf Hagas. The main lodge serves family-style breakfasts and dinners, and the nine simple log cabins furnished with propane lamps and woodstoves sleep up to six. They're warm and comfy—a wonderful welcome after rolling around in the snow—clothed or otherwise. Cabins from $120, including meals.
